The following are some examples of various PPE and equipment that a Shipyard worker must have to perform their duties:
- It is recommended that workers wear a Hi-Visibility Hard Hats, class 1 or class 2. I should be white, yellow, yellow-green, orange or red in color. It is recommended to have 12 sq. in. of reflective material applied for dark areas and nighttime usage.
- Hi-Visibility Garments should be fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red or fluorescent red in color and have reflective material to provide 360° of coverage.
- Boots: Personally I swear by Timberlands, but they are very expensive, but worth the money.
- OSHA requires the boot to be over the ankle. No safety toe tennis shoes, sneakers or under the ankle cut boots.
- Must have reinforced toe (safety toe). Steel is OK, but it's heavy and cold in the winter. Composite or Kevlar (expensive) are the best. They are lightweight, which helps with fatigue, and they do not get cold as easy as steel.
- In inclement weather, high tops are the best, especially for snow.
- Safety Glasses: preferred clear wrap around are typically the best fit. If not a wrap around, side sheilds are required.
- #2 tinted safety glasses are required for Firewatches. If welder curtains are not being used it is highly recommended that the Firewatch wear #5 tinted safety glasses.
- It is highly recommended that you have a headlamp, a small backup flashlight and even a third key chain light while working on Naval vessels.
- The compartments are very dark and if they lost power it can become unbearably dark. Lots of light with extra batteries is highly recommended.
